Back this badass bread-boarding tool on Kickstarter!

It’s been super exciting to see all of our Product Design cohort’s various products take off! Besides checking out sketchmi on Kickstarter (Now at 15% funded! Breaking into the double digits yo),  you should also check out our classmate’s Kickstarter project Ohmkara. They have 5 days left in their campaign, and are very very close to getting funded!

From their Kickstarter page:

OHMkara is a bread-boarding multi-tool. Back us today and help us turn at-risk students into the next generation of makers and doers!

Our mission is to bring electronics curriculum to at-risk, Bay-Area middle and high school students who have little to no access to electronics or tech curriculum.

We have designed a multi-tool that, with our curriculum, will inspire students and ease the minds of teachers and educators. The simple tool allows for previously unseen efficiency in the learning and building process. We plan to create a sponsorship model where people like you can purchase these tools from our website and we would then donate them to schools in need.

They’re raising funds for their injection molding tooling, and I think it’s a pretty cool project, whether you’re getting it for yourself or for an at-risk student. Check it out and consider backing it 🙂

Team sketchmi is ridiculously excited to announce that our Kickstarter is officially live as of this morning!

Amidst the sweat and lack of sleep, we’ve had a lot of fun designing, testing, and playing with sketchmi. Now, we need your help. Take the next step with us by supporting our Kickstarter campaign, in whatever way you can.

Day 1 is super important for fundraising: the more backers and pledges we receive today, the more Kickstarter helps us spread the word about us! Every bit of support counts, and Alex and I really appreciate you standing behind us as we reach for our dreams.
With a whole lot of creative confidence, love, and gratitude,
Kylie + Alex

Phase 2!

sketchmi

We’ve officially hit the halfway point of our journey, which is exciting and scary and unbelievable all at the same time.

The last 10 weeks were all about finding a real need and transforming need to product. The next 10 weeks are all about bringing our product to real people.Kylie and I are in the thick of lots of things:

  • Making manufacturing layouts
  • Reaching out to swarms of bookbinders and arrestox suppliers and acrylic suppliers
  • Starting a social media presence
  • Working out our messaging and framing
  • Building a graphic design language
  • Etc

Ahh so much going on. Everything’s getting really real. 10 weeks, here we go!

A sketchmi a day… | sketchmi attempts the giving tree

Crackfic of The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. Yeah, I know it’s super lame but…

sketchmi

Once there was a tree…
and she loved a little boy.

And the boy loved the tree... very much. And the boy loved the tree… very much.

But time went by.
And the boy grew older, and less confident in his ability to create and imagine and draw.
The tree said, take this sketchmi and play with it!

And the boy did.
And both the boy and the tree were happy.

A spin-off of The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. Pardon the lame-ness, that’s totally on me.

Updates: We survived our midpoint presentation! Now testing with as many users as we can find!

Check out the awesome drawings that some of our young users created during our user testing sessions!

sketchmi

A big hello from brightbook sketchmi! (The name change is still pretty recent, and we occasionally catch ourselves slipping up. Thankfully not at our midpoint presentation!)

We’ve had a great spring break recharging our batteries, while doing our very best to make sketchmi a reality, real soon! We got good feedback at our midpoint presentation at the end of Winter quarter – the panel of experienced judges provided awesome ideas for exercises, which we’re in the process of developing and testing. You can find our midpoint presentation video here

They also suggested that we explored the possibility of pitching sketchmi to a younger audience, and incorporating more of an entertainment/fun feel to it. While we’d previously envisioned sketchmi as a drawing tool for people in their late teens / early 20s, we realized that there would be a lot of exciting possibilities if we expanded the age range that we…
